FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about HCG plus VLCD
If you have been a professional dieter like most of us (or not), you will be amazed on how well this diet works.
There is a high retention rate: 90% are able to stay on the program the 3 to 6 weeks. It has been claimed that
HCG in someway makes adherence to the VLCD diet easier, prevents hunger, has a mood elevating effect, and
redistributes fat by causing abnormal fat from “trouble areas” to be lost. Weigh yourself daily to keep motivated.
Follow the program and be amazed by the results. Planning in the beginning will pay off in the long run.
Is HCG plus the VLCD supported by medical evidence?
Yes, numerous clinics over the last 50 years support this method. Many studies have been done supporting HCG
and it beneficial effects. Those that have had negative results made their own variations and did not follow the
protocol. The roles of the hypothalamus in obesity and in the regulation of the pituitary are medically recognized.
Do I need a doctor’s approval to use the HCG plus VLCD?
With any program consult your physician.
Is 500 Calories per day safe? Won’t I starve?
The body begins to consume its stored fat which acts as a source of energy instead of food. , HCG is believed to
stimulate the release of fat reserves. Clinical studies have called a VLCD, “effective rapid weight reduction.”
Can I do the diet without HCG?
Yes, however studies support that HCG makes the process better. Physicians treating obesity for a long time and
have employed other methods find using HCG in combination with a VLCD more fruitful than any other.
I lost weight on diets before and now they don’t work. Why should I try this one?
Abnormal fat cells are different from the body’s normal fat and structural fat. These abnormal adipose cells are
more numerous, larger, overstuffed in appearance, and full of metabolic toxins. They produce a wealth of
inflammatory molecules leaving it in a chronic state of inflammation making them less sensitive to insulin and less
efficient to metabolize glucose. HCG plus VLCD appears to address these abnormal cells, whereas traditional
diets target normal fat. It was probably never about willpower, just the wrong approach.
What is HCG? How does HCG work?
HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is one of many hormones produced by the placenta, the temporary
endocrine organ present during pregnancy. It acts on the hypothalamus (diencephalon) indirectly influencing
other endocrine glands via the pituitary and contributes to eicosanoid (essential fatty acid) metabolism in the
brain. The diencephalon controls what happens inside the body. It regulates the autonomic nervous system
(body temperature, food intake, water balance and thirst, sleep-wake cycles, emotions, and biological rhythms
and drives). Disturbances in this part of the brain cause a number of disorders especially obesity. Obesity affects
the regulation of adipose tissue, the metabolism of fats and sugars, and the interpretation of gut hormones, like
insulin, ghrelin and leptin, of which influence hunger and fullness.
What is HCG? How does HCG work? (Continued)
The pituitary secretes or stores chemical messengers that affect all major endocrine systems and body
processes: Growth hormone (muscle/bone), Thyroid-stimulating hormone (thyroid), Adrenocorticotropic hormone
(adrenals), Follicle-stimulating hormone and Luteinizing hormone (ovaries/testes), Prolactin (breast), Oxytocin
(uterus), and Antidiuretic hormone (kidneys). Imbalances of any or all of these hormones can cause a myriad of
health problems. When the efficiency of endocrine glands decrease, especially as aging occurs (not necessarily
through time), this leads to a lower metabolic rate and a generalized increased incidence of diabetes mellitus.
Eicosanoid or fatty acid balance is essential to cellular function. These fatty acids are better known as Omega-
3, Omega-6, and Omega-9 and have been brought to the forefront lately with their role in the diet and products
of the United States. The deficit or abundance of any of these essential fatty acids is known to cause many
health problems.
It just shows how important a proper working hypothalamus is and how addressing a dysfunctional
hypothalamus can possible alleviate the need for so many medicines that treat many symptoms and diseases in
our society today.
Is HCG considered safe?
It is clinically labeled as a safe procedure. Possible side-effects are mild headache and fatigue in the first week,
constipation, hypoglycemia, irregular menstrual cycles, and increased libido. Please direct any medical questions
and concerns to your physician. There can be reasons not to take sublingual HCG. Adverse reactions may exist
under any circumstances. If you are pregnant, nursing or plan on becoming pregnant do not take HCG.
Do I have to exercise on the program?
No, but your results maybe enhanced. The concern is that there may be an increase demand for food and cause
hunger. Also, physical exertion of a long duration can result in weight gain if your body is not used to strenuous
exercise. Plan to start a fitness regime with Maintenance.
Can I start with 500 Calories the first day?
Absolutely not, it takes about 3 days to stimulate the abnormal fat. It is not readily available to fuel the body and
there could be marked hunger and weakness. It is necessary to load up with energy that will be burned those
first few days.
If I take more HCG or eat less will it speed up my weight loss?
No, in fact it may have the reverse effect. Dosage per day is a minimum of 30 drops and a maximum of 48 drops
(30 drops= 125 IU, 36 drops= 150 IU, 42 drops= 175 IU, 48 drops= 200 IU). Also, going too long without food
stresses the body and can increase the release of the fat storing hormone cortisol. Consuming lower amounts of
calories or increasing HCG does not speed up the process.
What if I miss a day, do I double the dose the next day?
No, in fact the original 40-day protocol allowed missing one day a week (always the same day) to stave off
immunity to HCG. Taking drops up to the maximum may be needed if abnormal hunger is present that next day.
Do not exceed 48 drops per day as it can have a counter effect or immunity may set in.
Why do I discontinue the HCG drops for the last 3 days?
Just as it takes 3 days to build up reserves, the HCG stays in the system just as long.
Do I skip the HCG drops during my menses?
It is an option but not necessary with sublingual HCG drops. The original protocol with HCG injections had
patients skip on their heaviest days. A noticeable increase in hunger may be present and there may not be any
weight loss at this time due to other hormonal activity taking place (this may also occur during ovulation).
I cheated, what do I do?
Get back on the plan immediately and stay consistent. A deviation may take up to 3 days to correct. There may
be a weight increase due to the increased demand of water needed to process the extra calories. So don’t be
shocked. Be consistent as possible and keep the trend towards overall weight loss.
I don’t really feel hungry, but empty. Is this normal?
Yes, a slight sensation of hunger or feeling of emptiness is normal. The intense feelings of hunger or cravings
you have had in the past should have diminished.
My hunger and cravings are not at all like they used to be and I am definitely more active than I was before, can I
use an appetite suppressant or B-12 for energy?
Yes, if approved by your physician, avoid those containing sugar. Many clinics promote the use of hoodia, B-12,
amino acid supplements, a daily multi-vitamin, etc. but are not part of the original protocol. If you haven’t eaten
you will be hungry, eat. Spreading the eight allowed food servings throughout the day are known to help
normalize hunger and blood sugar and to increase metabolism.
I started retaining water, why?
Possible causes are not drinking the recommended 2 quarts, excess sodium/lack of potassium, physical exertion,
or even hunger edema due to protein deficiency. Drink water, monitor salt/potassium levels, cut back on
strenuous exercise, or if protein deficient the plan allows the regular meals to be substituted for two eggs for
breakfast, a huge steak for lunch and dinner, followed by a large helping of cheese. If continues consult your
physician.
Can I use a diuretic?
No, water is an intricate part of the process of breaking down fat. Diuretics can cause a state of dehydration
which will slow or prevent this process and real weight will not be lost.
I haven’t had a bowel movement in 3 days is this normal?
Due to the decreased volume of food, 3 to 4 days is normal with this program. Consult your physician if condition
lasts longer. Laxatives are not recommended since they may cause water to be retained, use only if necessary
or recommended by your physician.
Are mints, gum, cough drops, throat lozenges, etc. allowed?
The original protocol does not allow them. Sugar-free varieties were not available 50 years ago; they may or may
not effect weight loss.
Why can’t I use cosmetics or lotion with oils?
The oil/fat may be absorbed through the skin or scalp and throw off the process. The HCG plus VLCD is very
intricate and limits fat either ingested or absorbed through the skin. Mineral oil can be used if the skin becomes
extremely dry.
Can I tan?
Yes, use lotion or sunscreen with no oil.
Can I have a massage?
Not for the purpose of stimulating fat, it can disrupt the weight loss process. Do not use massage lotions
containing oil.
Can I skip the bread?
Yes, it may be omitted. However it may be need if sensitive to hypoglycemia. Make up the calorie deficit with the
vegetable.
Can I drink fruit juice as my food?
Only if you make the juice yourself, however it may not be as satisfying or filling. Whole fruits provide beneficial
fiber. Commercial juice is pasteurized and does not contain the enzymes needed for the VLCD.
What if I have a special event, holiday, vacation plans, etc?
Stop HCG drops 3 days prior but stay on the VLCD until the event; eat daintily, watch trigger foods, limit fats and
carbohydrates the best you can. Get back on track immediately. It may 3 days to start seeing results again.
If the interruption lasts more than 4 days: increase diet to at least 800 cal on the third day after discontinuing
drops; add meat, eggs, cheese, and milk, otherwise there could be hunger and weakness.
If this interruption is for less than two weeks, resume HCG and the 500 VLCD on the same day. If longer than
two weeks, start 500 VLCD after the 3rd day.
Do I have to do the maintenance?
It is strongly recommended. The theory is that it takes about 3 weeks for the hypothalamus to stabilize after HCG
has left the system. The body, especially the brain and adipose tissue is sensitive to the adverse effects of bad
foods and bad eating habits. Time is needed to retrain and create better habits. Weigh daily, any fluctuation over
2 pounds needs to be addressed that day by only eating a huge steak with an apple or tomato for dinner. Only
water, tea, or coffee allowed throughout the day. Exercise, if recommended, at this time
If I gain any weight can I go back on the program?
Yes, however, a break equal to the time on the HCG is needed to prevent immunity to the HCG and replenish
normal fat reserves.
I’ve been on the program for awhile and now I started feeling hungry and weak. Why?
Dosage may be insufficient, take 16 drops-3 times per day for the maximum of 48. Or: Enough fuel/food is not
circulating to meet demands because abnormal fat reserves may be depleted or immunity to HCG may have
happened and is no longer stimulating the release of fat. If this happens the program allows an extra apple, or
150 grams of meat (instead of 100 per serving), or 2-3 extra bread sticks until at least 23 days have passed.
Drops should be discontinued if 23 days or more have been completed and there is no weight loss.
Plateaus or Unexpected Gains
I am following the program, why hasn’t the scale moved?
Weight elimination does not always happen evenly. Stay consistent.
Even seemingly insignificant deviations, thought to be improvements, are very liable to produce most
disappointing results or even nullify the effects completely. Factors intrinsic to the basic diet are its low calorie
value and composition of the foods listed. It is highly suggest sticking to the original Dr. Simeons’ diet without
alteration. It is recommended not to have the same meal twice in the same day to very the nutritional benefits
each food provides. A remedy to move the scale is to have up to six apples during a 24-hour period starting with
lunch through breakfast the following day.
Questions to ask if the scale hasn’t moved:
Am I……
…sick?
…sunburned?
…sleeping enough?
…exercising too much?
…eating too much salt?
…near the end of my plan?
…taking a diuretic or laxative?
…eating something not on the list?
…a woman with a change in my cycle?
…a woman at a certain phase in my cycle?
…drinking enough water (2 quarts per day)?
…eating enough protein (100 grams twice daily)?
…having active elimination at least every 3 to 4 days?
…taking vitamins, mints, gum, throat lozenges, cough drops, etc?
…on medication, especially thyroid (produces slower results) or cortisone?
…applying lotions or cosmetics containing oil type substances or organic fats?
...not sure?
